Pernambuco Governor Raquel Lyra Sets Goal of 40,000 Animal Sterilizations with Mobile Clinic
Governor Raquel Lyra of Pernambuco announced an expanded target for the state’s mobile sterilization unit, the Castramóvel, aiming to perform 40,000 free dog and cat neuterings by the end of the year, up from more than 20,000 already completed. The program, funded with a R$ 20 million investment by the Secretariat of Environment, Sustainability and Fernando de Noronha, operates in over 15 municipalities, conducting roughly 200 procedures daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. by appointment.
The mobile unit is currently stationed in Recife’s Derby neighborhood and Olinda’s Rio Doce district, with plans to visit other neighborhoods and cities such as Petrolina and Salgueiro later in the week. Officials highlighted the public‑health benefits, noting that each sterilization helps prevent stray‑animal populations and associated health risks.
