Raquel Lyra apologizes for suggestion of unauthorized tubal ligation

Pernambuco Governor Raquel Lyra has issued a public apology following the circulation of a video from May 2025. In the footage, recorded during an inauguration at the Dom Moura Regional Hospital, Lyra suggested that a tubal ligation should be performed on a pregnant woman without her knowledge.

Lyra stated that her remarks were “mistaken” and do not reflect her respect for women. She further claimed that the release of the video was an attempt to divert attention from the current electoral debate. The controversy has sparked protests in front of the Palácio do Campo das Princesas in Recife, and political opponents, including candidate João Campos, have criticized the comments as a violation of rights.

Under Brazilian Law 9.263/1996, surgical sterilization requires the express, written consent of the patient. Following her apology, Lyra faced further criticism after a comment made during an event at Sindhospe was interpreted by some as mockery regarding the situation.
