Pernambuco politicians jockey for alliances ahead of 2026 elections

Former Santa Cruz do Capibaribe mayor Fábio Aragão (PSD) said he will not share a political platform with state deputy Edson Vieira (Podemos) even though both back Governor Raquel Lyra’s reelection. Aragão told Rádio Estação’s Política em Pauta, “Pessoalmente eu não tenho nada contra ele…politicamente falando eu não tenho nenhuma afinidade…”.

The state’s party conventions begin on July 20, setting the slate for the 2026 contests for the State Assembly, Senate seats and the governorship. Partido Novo has announced the date of its convention and will decide whether to support Lyra’s government.

In João Pessoa, mayor Leo Bezerra (PSB) confirmed he will meet ex‑Patos mayor and Senate hopeful Nabor Wanderley (Republicanos) next week to discuss the 2026 political scenario, after rumors of a political pact with House Speaker Hugo Motta proved unfounded. The meeting is described as “administrative” and will include former governor João Azevêdo (PSB).
