Pernambuco police officer shot in head by off-duty colleague

A military police officer, Mateus Silva Almeida Canabarro, 29, was shot in the head during a confrontation with a colleague in Água Preta, Pernambuco. The incident occurred on Saturday night while Canabarro was on duty responding to a noise complaint regarding loud music.

The alleged shooter, identified as 30-year-old off-duty officer Nykollas Matheus de Lima Santos, reportedly engaged in an argument with the responding unit before firing the shots. Following the shooting, Santos fled the scene and remains at large.

Canabarro was transferred to the Hospital da Restauração in Recife, where he remains hospitalized in serious condition. The Military Police of Pernambuco has announced the opening of a Military Police Inquiry (IPM) to investigate the circumstances, while the General Corregedoria of the Social Defense Secretariat will conduct a preliminary investigation into the ethical and disciplinary conduct of the officer involved.
