Police shooting incident in Pernambuco
Overview
In Pernambuco, military police officer Mateus Silva Almeida Canabarro, 29, was shot in the head during a confrontation in Água Preta. The incident occurred while Canabarro was on duty responding to a noise complaint.
The suspected shooter, identified as off-duty officer Nykollas Matheus de Lima Santos, reportedly argued with the responding unit before firing the shots. Santos fled the scene and remains at large. Canabarro was transferred to the Hospital da Restauração in Recife and is in serious condition.
The Military Police of Pernambuco has opened a Military Police Inquiry (IPM) to investigate the incident, alongside a preliminary investigation by the General Corregedoria of the Social Defense Secretariat regarding the ethical and disciplinary conduct of the officer involved.
