Argentina: Lawyers elect representatives for Council of the Magistracy

In the elections to renew the lawyer representatives for Argentina's Council of the Magistracy for the 2026-2030 period, the list 'Unidad en Defensa de la Abogacía' emerged as the winner. Led by Alberto Biglieri and including Claudia Sarmiento, the group secured approximately 34% of the vote, earning two of the four available seats.

The remaining two seats were split between two Peronist lists. 'Abogacía Unida y Dignidad Profesional', led by Itatí Demarchi Arballo, obtained roughly 31-32% of the vote to secure one seat. 'Abogacía Federal', headed by Fernando Levene, received approximately 26% to claim the final seat. The government-aligned list, 'Abogacía por la Libertad', led by Luis Palomino, finished in fourth place with approximately 7.6% and failed to secure representation.

The Council of the Magistracy is a 20-member body responsible for the selection, discipline, and administration of national and federal judges. This renewal occurs amidst a significant political landscape, as the body's composition will influence the judicial environment leading up to the 2027 presidential elections and the upcoming end of Horacio Rosatti's term as President of the Supreme Court.
