Argentina National Council of the Magistracy elections
Overview
The election for the National Council of the Magistracy, held on October 20, 2026, to select representatives for the 2026-2030 term, has concluded. Approximately 184,000 federal lawyers participated in the vote to elect four titular members and alternates responsible for selecting judges, managing judicial resources, and overseeing disciplinary procedures.
Final results indicate a shift in seat distribution following the application of the D’Hondt proportional system. The list ‘Unidad en Defensa de la Abogacía’, led by Alberto Biglieri and supported by figures such as Ricardo Gil Lavedra, emerged as the winner with approximately 34% of the vote (11,237 votes), securing two seats for Biglieri and Claudia Sarmiento.
The remaining two seats will be split between Peronist-aligned factions. The list ‘Abogacía Unida y Dignidad Profesional’, led by Itatí Demarchi Arballo and associated with sectors of Peronism and La Cámpora, secured one seat with roughly 31-32% of the vote. The ‘Abogacía Federal’ list, headed by Fernando Levene and supported by Diego Molea, obtained the final seat with approximately 26% of the votes.
The government-aligned list, ‘Abogacía por la Libertad’ (La Libertad Avanza), led by Luis Palomino, finished in fourth place with approximately 7.6% of the votes and failed to secure any representation.
Itatí Demarchi Arballo, representing the ‘Abogacía Transformadora’ group, secured her seat after her list won in 40 professional colleges and voting locations, including major wins in Santa Fe, the northern provinces, the littoral region, and Patagonia. As a native of Villa María, Córdoba, she will be the sole representative from Córdoba among the four selected lawyers. The renewal of this 20-member body occurs amidst a significant political landscape, influencing the judicial environment leading up to the 2027 presidential elections and the end of Horacio Rosatti’s term as President of the Supreme Court.
