Paraguay political landscape: opposition unity efforts and presidential ambitions
In Paraguay, political movements are actively organizing ahead of the 2028 elections. Paraguayo 'Payo' Cubas, leader of the Cruzada Nacional Party, has called for a summit of opposition leaders on November 1 in Asunción to discuss forming a unified presidential ticket and consensus mechanisms.
Alcides Riveros, president of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA), confirmed that the party will analyze the invitation to this unity meeting with its political committee. Riveros emphasized that while increasing the number of viable candidates is positive, the opposition must first establish a cohesive national project to avoid future failures.
Separately, President Santiago Peña has announced his intention to run for a seat on the Governing Board of the Asociación Nacional Republicana (ANR) following the conclusion of his term in 2028. This move has sparked legal debate regarding Article 237 of the National Constitution, which outlines incompatibilities for the presidency. Legal experts suggest that the private nature of the ANR board position may conflict with the constitutional requirements of the presidency.
