End-of-life care and dementia awareness initiatives in Germany and Austria

Various initiatives in Germany and Austria are focusing on end-of-life care, dementia awareness, and grief support. In Bavaria, the Dementia Week (September 18–28) aims to sensitize the public to the challenges faced by those living with dementia and their caregivers through diverse community programs.

In Munich, the 2nd Hospice and Palliative Care Week (October 10–17) will feature over 30 events to discuss death, dying, and mourning, emphasizing that no one should face the final stages of life alone. Additionally, the Salzkammergut Klinikum Vöcklabruck in Austria is offering a ‘Last Help Course’ to provide practical skills for those accompanying terminally ill relatives.

Psychological perspectives on loss are also being highlighted. Experts discuss ‘ambiguous loss’—a concept where a person is physically present but psychologically absent, such as in cases of dementia—and the importance of preparing for death to reduce anxiety for both the dying and their families.
