Healthcare and social support initiatives in Austria and DE

Social service and healthcare initiatives in Austria and Germany have focused on specialized support for vulnerable populations, including palliative care, mental health, and dementia awareness.

Initial efforts included the launch of a specialized nursing role for hospice counseling in Vienna to coordinate care for those with life-limiting illnesses. Simultaneously, the ‘NETZ’ pilot project was introduced in Nuremberg to provide psychosocial counseling and outreach for adults with mental illnesses facing housing instability.

Subsequent developments expanded the scope of community support through educational programs. In Vöcklabruck, Austria, the Salzkammergut Klinikum introduced a ‘Letzte Hilfe Kurs’ to train non-professionals in supporting terminally ill individuals. In Germany, awareness efforts included the Bavarian Dementia Week and the 2nd Munich Hospice and Palliative Week, which featured numerous events regarding death and grieving. These initiatives coincide with ongoing legal recognition in Germany regarding the right to a self-determined death.

Recent activities continue to emphasize community-based sensitization and psychological support. The Bavarian Dementia Week (September 18–28) aims to highlight the challenges faced by those living with dementia and their caregivers. In Munich, the 2nd Hospice and Palliative Care Week (October 10–17) is scheduled to host over 30 events focused on death, dying, and mourning, with the goal that ‘no one should face the final stages of life alone.’

Furthermore, experts are addressing the psychological complexities of loss, specifically ‘ambiguous loss’—a state where an individual is physically present but psychologically absent, as seen in dementia cases. Discussions emphasize that preparing for death can reduce anxiety for both the dying and their families.
