Indonesia's Pertamax price hike sparks stimulus call and parliamentary review

Experts warn the increase could erode purchasing power and push consumers toward the cheaper subsidised Pertalite, risking shortages of the latter.

In response, policy analysts have urged the government to introduce targeted stimulus, such as transport subsidies or direct cash assistance for low‑to‑middle‑income earners. Meanwhile, Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives plans a meeting with PT Pertamina to assess the impact of the price rise and to discuss safeguards against a large‑scale shift to Pertalite that could strain fuel stocks.

Local activists have also voiced criticism, citing President Prabowo Subianto’s pledge to lower living costs. One protester said the Pertamax hike “contradicts the president’s promise to reduce essential‑good prices," highlighting broader public concern over the cost of living.
