Peru advances copper mining projects and bio‑ceanic trade corridor to spur growth

Southern and central Peru are solidifying their role as the country’s economic engine. The Andean Regional Community, which produces about 40 % of Peru’s copper, now supports more than 86,000 direct mining jobs and generates S/ 2.6 billion in royalties. A mining project pipeline valued at over US$ 15 billion is led by Apurímac (US$ 10.2 billion), followed by Cusco, Junín and Ayacucho. The region will host the Andesmin 2026 convention in Ayacucho from 29 Oct to 1 Nov 2026, focusing on mining, territorial development, energy transition and sustainable water and agricultural use.

At the same time, Peru is positioning its north‑east corridor as a shortcut between Brazil and the Asia‑Pacific, potentially shaving up to 22 days from current shipping routes. Edgar Vásquez of CIEN‑ADEX highlighted that leveraging existing river, maritime, air and road infrastructure—particularly the Amazonine fluvial link used for 58 % of Peru‑Brazil trade—could attract investment, create jobs and boost logistics services. Realising this bio‑ceanic corridor will require removing non‑tariff barriers, updating sanitary protocols and reactivating multimodal projects, turning the north‑east macro‑region, which holds 52.5 % of Peru’s territory and 30.5 % of its population, into a major growth engine.
