Water security initiatives launched in Peru and Mexico

Regional authorities and experts are addressing growing water security challenges across Latin America. In Peru, the XV National Water Forum highlighted the need for public and private sector collaboration to build resilience against climate change and the El Niño phenomenon. Experts warned of a high probability of heavy rains in some areas and significant rainfall deficits in the highlands and jungle.

In Mexico, efforts to manage water resources include technical training for operators in Hidalgo to improve potable water network conservation. Additionally, the National Water Commission (Conagua) has partnered with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) to implement artificial intelligence and satellite data for enhanced water security and basin restoration.

Concerns regarding water scarcity persist in other Mexican regions. In the State of Mexico, specialists noted that aging infrastructure and outdated protocols must be updated to meet urban growth and climate shifts. Meanwhile, in Guanajuato, academics warned of a potential ‘water bankruptcy’ due to irreversible depletion and pollution, urging immediate sustainable strategies.
