Peru and Uruguay affirm shared commitment to judicial independence and separation of powers

During events marking the Day of the Judge in Lima, Peru's Supreme Court president Janet Tello Gilardi said Peru and Uruguay share firm positions on judicial independence and the separation of powers. She noted common challenges and a history of sincere diplomatic friendship.

Uruguay's Supreme Court president Doris Morales Martínez echoed the view, stressing that an independent judiciary is essential for democracy and that economic independence of courts is jeopardized by limited budgets. Morales cited Uruguay's constitution, which leaves the judiciary's budget subject to executive modification, resulting in only 6% of the requested funds being granted.

The academic session also featured the presentation of the book “El humo, la patria o la tumba,” recounting Uruguay’s landmark case against Philip Morris, where a tribunal upheld public‑health interests over the tobacco company.
