Peru and Uruguay implement flood prevention measures
Authorities in Peru and Uruguay are implementing preventive measures to mitigate the risks of flooding and overflows associated with the El Niño phenomenon.
In Peru, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) is supervising cleaning, desilting, and dike construction in critical areas of the Lambayeque region. Through the Special Project Jequetepeque Zaña (PEJEZA), interventions are underway in several sectors, including Algarrobal Alto, Dos Cruces, and Puente Fierro, to facilitate water flow and protect agricultural lands used for vegetables, fruits, and tubers. A total of 14 interventions are being executed across the northern regions of Lambayeque and La Libertad.
In Uruguay, the Intendencia de Florida is conducting cleaning and channeling work on the Tomás González stream. The project involves deep cleaning the riverbed, removing weeds, and clearing waste to improve drainage. Local authorities have noted the presence of garbage in the watercourse and have urged the population to use proper waste disposal sites to prevent drainage blockages.
