Peru announces mining canon reform to benefit local communities

Peru's Minister of Energy and Mines, Guillermo Shinno, has announced plans for structural reforms to the mining canon. The objective is to redirect a portion of these resources directly to the communities and areas immediately surrounding mining operations.

Currently, the canon is distributed to regional governments and often concentrated in provincial or district capitals, or in some cases, lost to corruption or inefficient spending. The proposed reform seeks to mandate that part of these funds goes directly to local mining environments to address basic infrastructure needs. Shinno noted that the reform must be accompanied by efforts to strengthen the capacity of local and provincial authorities to ensure timely and effective investment.
