Susy Isabel Aponte Polo, a journalist and regional governor candidate for Áncash, was assassinated during a campaign event in the market of Caraz, Peru. The attack, which occurred on Saturday, September 19, also left five people wounded.

Peruvian authorities have detained three suspects in connection with the crime. National Prosecutor Tomás Gálvez Villegas confirmed that the detainees include a suspected hitman, a potential financier, and an individual who allegedly assisted in transporting the perpetrator. Investigations have expanded to Lima, where a second Venezuelan national, Ronald José Toro Artila, was apprehended for his suspected involvement in the logistics of the attack.

Prior to her death, Aponte Polo, known as ‘La China Polo,’ had publicly denounced receiving death threats from prisons. She had specifically accused the head of Criminal Investigation for the National Police, Víctor Revoredo Farfán, of ordering an attempt on her life. Aponte Polo was a prominent investigative journalist known for reporting on corruption within the judicial and police sectors.
