Assassination of Susy Aponte Polo in Áncash

Overview

On September 19, 2026, Susy Ysabel Aponte Polo, a journalist and regional government candidate for the Socios por Áncash movement, was assassinated during a campaign event at a market in Caraz, Peru. Known as ‘China Polo’, she was reportedly shot from behind, an attack that also wounded between two and five people, including three minors.

Aponte Polo had previously reported receiving death threats from individuals in penitentiaries. She had specifically accused the head of Criminal Investigation for the National Police, Víctor Revoredo Farfán, of ordering an attempt on her life. By September 21, Peruvian authorities had detained three suspects. Luis Iván Obispo Díaz, a Venezuelan national, was identified as the alleged perpetrator; police recovered a firearm during his capture that was reportedly stolen from a member of the National Police of Peru. A second suspect, Ronald José Toro Artila, was apprehended in Lima for allegedly facilitating the shooter’s transport and lodging. A third individual, suspected of financing the assassination, has also been detained as investigators work to determine who ordered the attack. National Prosecutor Tomás Gálvez Villegas confirmed the arrests of the suspected hitman, a potential financier, and an individual who allegedly assisted in the logistics of the attack.
