Peruvian Congress reorganizes legislative commissions for 2026-2027

The Peruvian legislature has undergone significant restructuring for the 2026-2027 session period. In the Senate, Carlos Mesía Ramírez of Fuerza Popular was elected president of the Constitution, Regulation, and Foreign Relations Commission, while Daniel Barragán Coloma of the Obras party was chosen to lead the Productive Development, Energy, and Mines Commission.

In the Chamber of Deputies, Juntos por el Perú has secured leadership of several strategic commissions, including Constitution, Justice and Human Rights, and Energy and Mines. Additionally, Henry Albañil has been appointed to lead the Ethics Commission.

The transition to a bicameral system has been marked by logistical challenges and internal friction. Lawmakers from the Ahora Nación party have reported inadequate working conditions, citing a lack of internet, computers, and functional offices. This has led to disputes over office space between Ahora Nación and Fuerza Popular, which required intervention from Senate President Miguel Ángel Torres to resolve. Critics have also raised concerns regarding the administrative readiness of the new legislative structure despite allocated budgets.
