Peru coast faces record heat and rising temperatures
The Peruvian coast is experiencing unseasonably high temperatures, with record-breaking heat reported in Lima. On October 18, the Carabayllo station recorded 30°C, an unusual mark for October, occurring two months before the summer season. This breaks the previous record set in La Molina in October 2023.
The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru (Senamhi) attributes these rising temperatures to northern winds that clear cloud cover and increase solar radiation, as well as atmospheric and oceanic conditions associated with the current El Niño Costero event.
Forecasts indicate that high temperatures will persist through October 31. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach between 32°C and 38°C in Piura and Tumbes, and between 30°C and 38°C in Lambayeque and Ica. In Lima and Áncash, temperatures are projected to range between 27°C and 34°C. Authorities have issued warnings for several departments, including Áncash, Arequipa, Lima, and Piura, recommending sun protection and increased hydration.
