Record heat and rising temperatures on Peru coast

Overview

Peru continues to face significant weather fluctuations driven by the El Niño Costero phenomenon. While the San Martín region previously experienced heat waves in Tarapoto, the coastal regions are now reporting record-breaking temperatures.

On October 18, the Carabayllo station in Lima recorded 30°C, an unusual mark for October that broke the previous record set in La Molina in October 2023. Senamhi attributes these rising temperatures to northern winds that clear cloud cover and increase solar radiation, alongside atmospheric and oceanic conditions linked to El Niño.

Forecasts suggest high temperatures will persist through October 31. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach between 32°C and 38°C in Piura and Tumbes, and between 30°C and 38°C in Lambayeque and Ica. In Lima and Áncash, projected temperatures range from 27°C to 34°C.

In response to these conditions, authorities have issued warnings for several departments, including Áncash, Arequipa, Lima, and Piura, recommending sun protection and increased hydration.
