Peru conducts national multi-hazard drill for magnitude 8.8 earthquake

Peru conducted its second national multi-hazard drill of 2026 on August 14 to test emergency response protocols. The exercise simulated a magnitude 8.8 earthquake affecting Lima and Callao, followed by a potential tsunami. President Keiko Fujimori led the drill in Lima's Plaza de Armas, accompanied by government officials and the head of the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci).

The drill utilized the SISMATE emergency alert system to send notifications to mobile phones. Regional scenarios were tailored to local risks: coastal areas practiced tsunami evacuations, the highlands simulated landslides and mudflows, and the jungle regions focused on heavy rainfall and river flooding.

Authorities emphasized the importance of preparedness, noting that while earthquakes cannot be predicted, organized evacuation and family emergency plans can mitigate loss of life. In Tacna, the drill simulated an 8.0 magnitude earthquake and a 15-meter tsunami, while in Loreto, judicial authorities participated to strengthen institutional response capabilities.
