Peru confirms 11 citizens dead in Russia-Ukraine conflict

The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the deaths of 11 Peruvian nationals involved in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. According to official records, these individuals were reportedly victims of forced recruitment mafias that used fraudulent job offers to coerce them into military service for the Russian army.

In addition to the fatalities, the Ministry reports that 114 Peruvians are missing and three are currently held by Ukrainian forces. The official registry currently lists a total of 459 Peruvians in Russia. To address the crisis, Foreign Minister Carlos Espá summoned the Russian Ambassador to Peru, Alekséi Ushakov, to demand precise information regarding the location and status of the deceased, missing, and detained citizens.

Peruvian authorities have sent a special delegate to Moscow to investigate the conditions of nationals in combat zones. While consular efforts have successfully evacuated 31 citizens, families of the victims have expressed frustration over the perceived lack of government action and the slow pace of diplomatic progress in securing DNA testing and the repatriation of remains.
