Peru Constitutional Court President Urges Proof as Candidate Sánchez Alleges Election Fraud

Presidential candidate Roberto Sánchez denounced a “fraud in development” in Peru’s runoff election, claiming irregularities in the handling of overseas votes after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ordered physical transmission of results to Lima. He said the change broke electoral norms, gave the advantage to rival Keiko Fujimori, and announced he would not recognize a Fujimori government, urging street mobilizations to defend democracy. Sánchez’s party also filed a constitutional complaint seeking the ten‑year disqualification of foreign minister Carlos Pareja.

Helder Domínguez, president of the Constitutional Tribunal, responded that any accusation of electoral irregularities must be substantiated with objective evidence. He called on all democratic actors to respect the will of voters and reminded that potential constitutional violations could be examined by the courts, including possible parliamentary procedures for political ineligibility. Domínguez declined to comment on the specific case, noting it may eventually be addressed through a habeas corpus or other constitutional processes.
