Latin American nations advance strategic mineral cooperation and investment
Latin American nations are strengthening cooperation and investment in the strategic minerals sector. Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru signed a joint declaration to coordinate the strengthening of critical minerals, including copper, lithium, and rare earths, to position the region as a reliable global supplier.
In Chile, Cochilco reported a mining investment portfolio for 2025-2034 valued at US$104,549 million, the highest in over a decade. Approximately 81% of this investment is intended for the replacement and expansion of existing mines. Experts suggest that increased cooperation between Chile, Peru, and Argentina could raise their combined global copper market share to 48%.
In Peru, mining remains a vital economic pillar, accounting for 9.1% of the GDP and 66% of exports. A study by Macroconsult indicates that mining operations drive local economies, generating an average of S/1.6 million in additional annual sales for businesses in mining localities. Meanwhile, in Argentina, the mining giant BHP, through its company Cerro Quebrado S.A., has been awarded the El Seguro copper exploration project in Mendoza.
In Brazil, the federal government has launched a R$3.3 billion ten-year plan to expand geophysical surveys and increase the knowledge of critical minerals in the subsoil.
