Peru economy shows mixed growth amid mining and port updates

Overview

By mid-September 2026, Peru’s economic landscape presented mixed signals. While the economy grew by 3.56% in July, driven by commerce, construction, and services, other sectors faced significant challenges. The fishing sector experienced a 27.44% contraction due to the impact of El Niño on anchovy populations, and non-traditional exports to Hong Kong fell by 31.4%.

The mining sector remains a primary driver of growth. Traditional exports, including copper, gold, and silver, rose by 13.2% in July. Industry experts, including Víctor Gobitz of Buenaventura, suggest that copper mine expansions could mobilize between US$ 5 billion and US$ 6 billion annually. These expansions focus on scaling existing operations rather than greenfield projects to maintain lower risk profiles. Peru’s copper project portfolio currently exceeds US$ 60 billion in identified projects. Additionally, Canadian company Xali Gold is refocusing resources on the Pico Machay gold project in the Huánuco region.

Infrastructure investment continues through port concessions. ProInversión reports increased private sector interest through contract amendments. This includes a US$ 700 million investment and a 30-year extension for the Port of Matarani, and a US$ 1.5 billion proposal from DP World to expand its pier in Callao. APM Terminals is also considering contract modifications to optimize terminals and expand logistical capacity.

To enhance transparency, the Ministry of Economy and Finance has approved the 2026 International Financial Reporting Standards. Regarding future outlooks, Credicorp Capital projects 3.2% growth for 2026, though it has raised its inflation forecast to 4.7%. Minister Elmer Cuba has advised a conservative 4% projection for 2027 due to ongoing climate threats.
