Peru President Keiko Fujimori mobilizes earthquake aid and seeks US‑backed anti‑crime coalition
Following a magnitude‑5.1 earthquake on 18 July that devastated districts in the Junín region, Caja Huancayo pledged S/21.5 million through the Obras por Impuestos mechanism to fund temporary housing modules for about 500 families whose homes were destroyed. The funding was announced in a meeting that included President Keiko Fujimori, the bank’s board, and the Ministry of Housing.
In parallel, President Fujimori told U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Peru wishes to join the “Escudo de las Américas” coalition, a Trump‑initiated initiative aimed at sharing intelligence and coordinating actions against trans‑national organized crime. Rubio reiterated U.S. interest in deepening cooperation with Peru on security, trade and disaster response.
The president also visited the VRAEM region, inspected the Valle Esmeralda anti‑terrorist base, and reaffirmed support for the armed forces in their fight against narcotrafficking and remnants of insurgent groups. Meanwhile, the government has not yet decided whether to issue a salvoconduct for former prime minister Betssy Chávez, who remains in the Mexican embassy in Lima.
