Peru President Keiko Fujimori rolls out security, aid and diplomatic moves
Keiko Fujimori was inaugurated as Peru’s president on 28 July 2026 and quickly announced a security package that deploys the armed forces against organized crime, proposes new high‑security prisons and measures to curb extortion, illegal mining and drug trafficking. Within days she signed a S/ 21.5 million Obras por Impuestos agreement with Caja Huancayo to build temporary housing modules for about 500 families displaced by the 18 July Junín earthquake.
Fujimori also visited the VRAEM region, inspected the Valle Esmeralda anti‑terrorist base and pledged continued support for the armed forces in counter‑narcotics operations. In a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the United States expressed interest in cooperating with Peru on security, trade and disaster response, and Fujimori voiced interest in joining the “Escudo de las Américas” coalition against trans‑national crime.
Domestically, the president faced criticism from legislator César Tito for a first‑nation message that omitted concrete projects for the southern Andes, while abroad the diaspora vote was highlighted as decisive in her narrow victory. The government has not yet decided on a salvoconduct for former prime minister Betssy Chávez, and former first lady Eliane Karp renewed a request for a humanitarian indult for ex‑president Alejandro Toledo.
