Peru demands information from Russia on recruited citizens
Peru has formally demanded that the Russian government provide information regarding the location and status of Peruvian citizens recruited to fight in the war in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Carlos Espá has summoned the Russian ambassador to Peru on two occasions to seek concrete answers.
Official data from the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicates that as of August 18, 459 Peruvians have enlisted in Russian forces. The breakdown of these individuals includes 300 still enlisted, 114 missing, 11 deceased, and 3 captured. Additionally, 31 individuals were evacuated from Russia, with 28 successfully returning to Peru.
Investigations and testimonies from families suggest a sophisticated recruitment network. Recruiters allegedly used social media and personal contacts to target individuals facing economic hardship, promising lucrative jobs in security or surveillance. Instead, these citizens were reportedly transported to the front lines of the conflict in Ukraine. Authorities have warned the public against falling victim to these human trafficking schemes.
