Peru and Panama respond to forest fires and earthquake emergencies
Peru is facing a widespread emergency due to numerous active forest fires affecting multiple regions, including Cusco, Ayacucho, Puno, and Áncash. The Peruvian Ministry of Defense has deployed military personnel, including the Army and the Air Force, to conduct land and aerial operations. To bolster firefighting capabilities, the government has announced the acquisition of 19 additional helibuckets. In the Ayacucho region, the Army successfully controlled eight fires over a ten-day period. Additionally, Ingemmet has identified 2,186 critical zones across Peru that are highly vulnerable to climate-related emergencies such as landslides and floods.
In Panama, authorities are responding to the aftermath of a significant earthquake. Humanitarian aid, including approximately 26 tons of food, water, and essential supplies, is being distributed to affected provinces such as Herrera, Los Santos, and Coclé. Efforts are underway to rehabilitate damaged roads to ensure aid reaches remote coastal towns like Tonosí. While the earthquake caused material damage, officials report that there have been no human casualties.
