On 2 August 2026 the Peruvian government deported three Venezuelan nationals linked to the transnational criminal group Tren de Aragua after they completed eight‑year prison terms for illegal weapons possession. The operation was overseen by Defence Minister Rafael Belaúnde, Interior Minister César Astudillo and Foreign Minister Carlos Espá, and was carried out from the Group Air Nº 8 base in Callao using a Peruvian Air Force Spartan C‑27J aircraft. The expelled individuals were identified as Edinson Agustín Barrera (alias Catire), Rodismel Alcántara (alias Rody) and Rafael Sorrilla (alias Rafa) and were handed over to Venezuelan authorities. The same flight also repatriated ten Peruvian citizens who had been displaced by the June 2024 double earthquake in Venezuela; President Keiko Fujimori received them at the air base. Peru announced that further expulsions of foreign criminals with pending requisitions will continue and that the military will reinforce border controls. The reopening of Peruvian consular services in Venezuela facilitated the coordinated deportations and humanitarian return.
