Tren de Aragua cartel expansion and arrests

Overview

In mid-August 2026, security forces identified a trend of Latin American criminal organizations, including Tren de Aragua, MS13, and Primeiro Comando da Capital, implementing expansion strategies into Europe via Spain. These groups are described as operating as “autonomous criminal franchises” intended to infiltrate political and economic structures through corruption and extortion.

In late August, legal and enforcement actions against Tren de Aragua continued in South America. In Chile, two alleged members of the organization, Adrián Gámez (alias ‘El Turko’) and Luis Carrillo (alias ‘El Gocho’), were extradited to face charges regarding the kidnapping and murder of former Venezuelan lieutenant Ronald Ojeda. Gámez, identified as a leader of the ‘Los Piratas’ cell, was extradited from the United States, while Carrillo was extradited from Colombia following an Interpol red notice. Both suspects have been transferred to a high-security prison in Santiago.

Simultaneously, in Colombia, authorities captured five suspected members of Tren de Aragua in Villa del Rosario during an attempted extortion operation.
