Peru earthquake: 4.4 magnitude tremor hits Huacho
A 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck central Peru on the night of September 24, according to the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP). The tremor originated at a depth of 46 kilometers, with its epicenter located approximately 48 kilometers southwest of Huacho in the Huaura province of the Lima region.
The movement was classified as light, registering an intensity of III on the Modified Mercalli scale in Huacho. Residents in nearby coastal communities reported feeling the tremor, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage.
This event followed another seismic tremor in the San Martín province, where a 3.9-magnitude earthquake occurred at a shallower depth of 14 kilometers earlier that same evening. Peru's frequent seismic activity is attributed to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the Nazca Plate and the South American Plate converge.
