Peru evaluates gas concession extension for Cálidda

The Peruvian government is considering an addendum to the natural gas distribution concession held by Cálidda. The proposal would allow the company to expand its operations from Lima and Callao into several regions, including Apurímac, Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica, Junín, Puno, and Ucayali.

In exchange for investing hundreds of millions of dollars, the proposal seeks to extend Cálidda’s concession by ten years, moving the expiration date from 2033 to 2043. There are conflicting reports regarding the scale of the investment: the Ministry of Energy and Mines has cited figures above US$550 million covering 3,700 kilometers of networks, while other project documents suggest an investment of up to US$663 million covering 2,510 kilometers.

Separately, the Sociedad Peruana de Gas Licuado (SPGL) has called for the decentralization of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) infrastructure. Currently, reception and storage are concentrated between Pisco and Callao. The SPGL argues that developing more terminals and storage facilities along the coast is necessary to ensure national supply stability against technical failures, social unrest, or natural phenomena.
