Peru experiences frequent seismic activity amid warnings of energy buildup

Peru continues to experience frequent seismic activity across multiple regions. Recent reports from the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) indicate several tremors in September 2026, including a 4.9 magnitude earthquake near Salaverry in La Libertad and multiple tremors in Cusco, Áncash, and Amazonas.

In Arequipa, a 4.2 magnitude earthquake occurred near Vitor with an intensity of IV on the Mercalli scale. No material damage or casualties were reported from this specific event.

Seismologist César Jiménez Tintaya of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos has raised concerns regarding a seismic gap on the central coast. He noted that since the last megathrust earthquake in 1746, only approximately 20% of the accumulated tectonic energy has been released through smaller events, suggesting the potential for a future earthquake exceeding magnitude 8.0.
