Peru experiences multiple tremors, including 3.4‑magnitude quake near Chupaca and 4.3‑magnitude quake near Ica

On 20 July 2026 the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) reported two earthquakes in different regions of the country. A 3.4‑magnitude tremor struck at 9:45 p.m. about 12 km south of Chupaca in Junín, at a depth of 10 km. It was the fifth quake recorded since 18 July, when a magnitude 5.1 event caused the collapse of dozens of adobe homes and six deaths. Residents of Chongos Bajo set up tents, fearing further aftershocks, while IGP officials said the event is linked to reactivation of the Altos del Mantaro fault.

Earlier that morning, at 06:51 a.m., a 4.3‑magnitude quake occurred 44 km south of Ica at a depth of 59 km. No immediate damage or casualties were reported. Authorities reminded the public to keep emergency kits ready and to follow safety guidelines during tremors.
