Peru has experienced a series of seismic events across multiple regions, including Tumbes, Junín, Huánuco, Arequipa, Tacna, and Moquegua. In late August 2026, several tremors were recorded, including a magnitude 4.7 earthquake in Tumbes and a magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Chala, Arequipa. The Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) noted that this activity is consistent with the country's location on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

In response to a previous magnitude 5.1 earthquake in Junín that caused significant damage, the Peruvian government has authorized up to S/88.7 million in aid. This includes S/63.2 million for the Ministry of Housing to repair rural homes and S/25.5 million for temporary housing modules to assist families in Chupaca and Huancayo.

Local residents in areas like Pumpunya continue to face displacement and fear following the destruction of adobe homes. Authorities, including Indeci, continue to urge citizens to maintain emergency kits and follow evacuation protocols due to the ongoing seismic activity.
