Peru faces landslide risks as telecommunications infrastructure is reinforced

Peru faces significant risks from landslides and 'huaicos' (mudslides) due to climatic conditions linked to El Niño. The National Center for Estimation, Prevention and Reduction of Disaster Risk (Cenepred) reports that approximately 7,000 homes in Lima are at risk, with 19 districts in the metropolitan area identified as high-risk zones. Nationally, 691 districts across 22 departments are considered to have a very high probability of mass movement risks.

In response to these threats, telecommunications provider Claro Perú has reinforced its infrastructure in the northern regions of the country, including Piura, Tumbes, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Áncash, Cajamarca, and Amazonas. The company has increased its specialized technical crews by 50% and deployed various energy backup systems, including 114 portable generators, 143 stationary generators, and solar-hybrid solutions, to ensure communication continuity during potential emergencies.
