Peru implements advanced monitoring technology for disaster prevention and heritage conservation

Peru is implementing new technological monitoring systems to protect both its citizens and historical heritage from natural risks. In the Ancash region, the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) has activated the first stage of a monitoring network in the Cordillera Blanca. This system uses cameras, solar panels, and altitude sensors in high-risk ravines such as Llaca-Casca, Llullán, Mancos, and Llanganuco to detect potential mudslides, debris flows, and glacial lake outbursts caused by climate change.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Culture has received high-precision 3D monitoring technology for the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary through cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and FUTABA Inc. Using drones, laser scanners, and satellite navigation, the 3D-SACURA project provides digital records with centimeter-level precision. These tools allow specialists to monitor structural deterioration, evaluate stability, and identify archaeological vestiges to guide preventive conservation efforts.
