Peru archaeological heritage and disaster monitoring

Overview

Peru has initiated several measures to protect its cultural heritage and manage environmental risks. Initially, the Ministry of Culture issued provisional protection orders for the Markapuchungo site in Apurímac and the Chahuillo archaeological landscape in Junín. These orders, lasting two to three years, aim to mitigate threats from potato farming, informal housing, livestock grazing, and heavy machinery use.

Following these administrative protections, the country has moved toward technological integration for conservation and disaster prevention. In the Ancash region, the Instituto Geofísico del Perú activated a monitoring network in the Cordillera Blanca using cameras and sensors to detect mudslides and glacial lake outbursts. Additionally, through cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, high-precision 3D monitoring technology—including drones and laser scanners—has been deployed at the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary to track structural deterioration and identify archaeological vestiges.
