Peru intensifies fight against childhood anemia and health gaps
Peru is intensifying efforts to combat childhood anemia and chronic malnutrition. The College of Nutritionists of Peru has offered technical support to the government with the goal of reducing anemia rates by half. Additionally, the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis) plans to strengthen community kitchens and soup pots nationwide to address nutritional needs in children.
Data from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) indicates that more than 34.9% of children under five in Peru suffer from anemia, with particularly high rates in the regions of Puno, Loreto, and Cusco.
Parallel to these nutritional efforts, concerns persist regarding the country's healthcare infrastructure. While approximately 93.9% of the population holds some form of health insurance, significant gaps remain in the operational capacity of medical facilities. Many health centers, especially in rural, Andean, and Amazonian areas, lack essential services such as reliable electricity, clean water, internet, adequate medication, and sufficient medical personnel to provide effective care.
