Peru issues alert over false Russian job offers recruiting citizens for military service
The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cusco has issued an alert regarding fraudulent recruitment schemes targeting Peruvian citizens, particularly youth. Intermediary agencies are reportedly using social media to advertise false employment and educational opportunities in Russia to lure individuals toward the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine war.
According to data from Russian authorities updated as of July 21, 459 Peruvian citizens have been enlisted in the Russian military, 114 are reported missing, and 11 have died. Officials warn that once in Russia, individuals may be coerced into signing military service contracts. Such agreements can significantly limit the ability of the Peruvian government to intervene or facilitate the return of its citizens.
David Hurtado Fudinaga, Director of the Ministry's decentralized office in Cusco, urged the public to exercise extreme caution with high-paying job offers abroad and to verify all convocations through official channels before sharing identity documents or traveling.
