Peru launches canine vaccination campaigns to prevent rabies

Health authorities in Peru are launching large-scale canine vaccination campaigns to prevent the spread of rabies. In the Piura region, the Regional Health Directorate (DIRESA) plans to vaccinate over 169,000 dogs through the ‘Van Can 2026’ initiative. The campaign will offer free vaccines at strategic locations such as parks and markets, alongside complementary services like veterinary care and deworming.

In the San Román province, the Health Network reports that while the area has remained free of rabies cases for four years, approximately 500 dog bites have been recorded. To maintain this status, the ‘VANCAN’ vaccination campaign will establish 130 posts in San Miguel and Juliaca. Health officials emphasize the importance of prevention and advise that anyone bitten by a dog should immediately wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical attention.
