Rabies vaccination campaigns in Latin America

Overview

Various Latin American nations are implementing large-scale rabies vaccination campaigns for domestic animals to prevent human transmission.

In Mexico, authorities in the State of Mexico have reported high vaccination rates, having applied over 10 million doses for dogs and cats between September 2023 and July 2026. A reinforcement week is scheduled from September 20 to 26 across all 125 municipalities. Additionally, Tamaulipas has announced plans to administer 80,000 more doses to reach a total exceeding 264,000, utilizing health centers and mobile brigades. These efforts also include increased surveillance for screwworm by inspecting animal wounds.

In Peru, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) launched the VANCAN 2026 campaign to immunize more than 3.5 million dogs. In the Piura region, the Regional Health Directorate (DIRESA) planned to vaccinate over 169,000 dogs, offering free vaccines alongside veterinary care and deworming. In the San Román province, officials established 130 posts in San Miguel and Juliaca to maintain a rabies-free status; while the area has seen no rabies cases for four years, approximately 500 dog bites have been recorded.

In Argentina, the Ministry of Productive Development is coordinating rabies prevention in the Ambato department of Los Varela. Following detected cases, officials from SENASA and INTA are working with local municipalities and the agricultural sector to identify bat habitats and implement vaccination protocols to protect livestock and the population.
