Peru maintains over 300,000 technified beehives for honey production

Peru possesses more than 300,000 technified beehives used for the production of honey and its derivatives, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI). This apiculture activity supports the economy of over 40,000 Peruvian families, serving as a vital secondary source of income that complements rural agriculture.

National honey production is estimated between 2,300 and 2,500 tons annually, with an average yield of 10.8 kg per beehive per year. Key production regions include Cusco, Cajamarca, Apurímac, Áncash, La Libertad, Junín, Pasco, San Martín, and Oxapampa, as well as coastal and dry forest areas in Piura, Lambayeque, and Lima.

To promote local consumption and sector competitiveness, MIDAGRI organized the Honey Festival (FESTIMIEL) on September 24 and 25. The event featured various products such as pollen, propolis, royal jelly, beeswax, and apitoxin, while providing educational tools to help consumers identify 100% pure honey and distinguish it from adulterated products.
