Peru apiculture sector development

Overview

Peru’s apiculture sector maintains over 300,000 technified beehives, supporting more than 40,000 families by providing a vital secondary income source to rural agriculture. According to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), annual honey production is estimated between 2,300 and 2,500 tons, with an average yield of 10.8 kg per hive.

Production is distributed across diverse ecosystems, including Andean zones, coastal areas, and dry forests. Major producing regions include Cusco, Cajamarca, Apurímac, Áncash, La Libertad, Junín, Pasco, San Martín, Oxapampa, Piura, Lambayeque, and Lima. The industry also commercializes derivatives such as propolis, pollen, royal jelly, beeswax, and apitoxin.

To bolster competitiveness and local consumption, MIDAGRI organized the Honey Festival (FESTIMIEL) on September 24 and 25. The event aimed to connect producers with consumers and provided educational resources to help the public distinguish 100% pure honey from adulterated products.
