Peru mayoral candidates face trial and campaign promises amid local elections
Emerson Nolasco Delgado, the Podemos Perú candidate for the mayoralty of Huancayo, has been ordered to stand trial for alleged incompatible negotiation. Prosecutors say that while serving as municipal manager of Huaribamba in 2018, he improperly facilitated a contract with Constructora Consultoras PLSCRL for a trout farm project, signing the agreement before the municipality owned the land and authorizing a payment of S/ 42,189.17 after the contractual deadline. The judge affirmed the indictment and the Public Ministry is seeking four years' imprisonment, a four‑year ban from public office and a fine. Delgado denies the charges and has filed a request to nullify the indictment.
In the same election cycle, Fernando Ñuñuvero, the Fuerza Popular candidate for mayor of Alto Trujillo, presented his platform. He emphasized the need to expand access to potable water and sewage, noting that about 45 % of the district’s residents still lack these services. Ñuñuvero also pledged to accelerate land‑titling through a cooperation agreement with Cofopri and to secure central‑government funding for infrastructure projects, aiming to reduce vulnerability to El Niño‑related emergencies.
