Peru mining sector faces challenge in retaining female talent
The Peruvian mining industry must move beyond simply attracting women to focus on retaining them and fostering professional growth into leadership roles, according to Magaly Bardales, director of the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP).
In 2024, female participation in Peru's mining employment reached 10.1%, marking the first time the sector has exceeded double digits. However, this remains significantly lower than levels seen in Chile, Australia, and Canada, which approach 20%.
Bardales emphasized a three-pillar approach: attraction, retention, and growth. To close the gap, she called for collaboration between the state, companies, academia, and industry associations. Key recommendations for businesses include reviewing shift systems, adapting operational infrastructure, ensuring safe environments free from harassment, and establishing clear long-term career development plans.
