Peru mining sector sees potential for US$ 6 billion in annual copper expansions
Copper mine expansions in Peru could mobilize between US$ 5 billion and US$ 6 billion annually, according to Víctor Gobitz, executive president of Buenaventura and former president of the National Mining, Petroleum and Energy Society (SNMPE). These expansions focus on scaling existing operations rather than developing new greenfield projects, offering lower risk profiles due to confirmed geology, existing infrastructure, and established permits.
In a separate strategic move, Canadian company Xali Gold is refocusing its resources on the Pico Machay gold project located in the Huánuco region of Peru. As part of this capital discipline, the company is also evaluating the potential divestment of its assets in Mexico to concentrate its operational capacity on its primary Peruvian focus.
Peru's copper project portfolio currently exceeds US$ 60 billion in identified projects. Successful expansion models, such as the Cerro Verde operation in Arequipa managed by Freeport-McMoRan, demonstrate the potential for significant capacity increases through such investments.
