Dengue outbreaks surge across Latin America and Mexico

Multiple countries in Latin America and Mexico are facing significant dengue fever outbreaks, driven by seasonal rains and the El Niño phenomenon.

In Peru, the Ministry of Health has reported over 71,000 cases and 75 deaths in 2026. The Piura region is the most affected with 13,025 cases. To combat the spread, the government is acquiring one million additional vaccines, prioritizing the 10 to 20 age group, and preparing field hospitals. The dengue serotype 3 is currently the predominant strain circulating.

Mexico is also experiencing high infection rates, with the state of Sonora emerging as a national epicenter, reporting 1,862 confirmed cases and five deaths. In Quintana Roo, 44 new cases were confirmed in a single week, bringing the yearly total to 404.

In Panama, cases have exceeded 10,400 for the year, with 20 deaths reported. Argentina has notified two imported cases during epidemiological week 40, while the country continues to monitor potential transmission following previous outbreaks in the northern regions.
