Peru MYPEs face high informality despite industrial growth

Micro and small enterprises (MYPE) continue to play a critical role in Peru's economy, though they face significant challenges regarding informality and infrastructure. In the Piura region, there were 425,760 MYPEs recorded in 2025, a 9.4% decrease from 2024. Despite the drop in the number of businesses, average annual sales rose by 15.8% to S/ 26,961, and average profits increased by 13% to S/ 9,803 compared to the previous year.

However, informality remains a major hurdle in Piura, affecting 92.6% of the region's MYPEs. Additionally, infrastructure gaps persist; only 56.3% of these businesses have an operational location, and among those with premises, access to basic services is low, with only 14.3% having potable water and 33.1% connected to the public electricity grid.

On a national level, the Sociedad Nacional de Industrias (SNI) reports that MYPEs constitute 98.9% of Peru's formal industrial business fabric. There are 198,583 formal industrial MYPEs in the country, showing a recovery to levels slightly above pre-pandemic figures. The textile and clothing sector is the largest industrial MYPE segment, accounting for 23.5% of the total, followed by metalworking and food and beverages.
